Personal Service
Renegade Solar is run personally by Ashley Merritt. He does the free survey himself, designs the system, oversees the installation on site, and is the person you'll speak to if there's a question afterwards. We're a small Manchester business, and we don't subcontract installs to people we don't know - when there's someone on your roof it's either us or one of our regular roofers.
Certified Installation
Every installation includes government-backed certifications: MCS, TrustMark and NAPIT. We use quality components with manufacturer warranties, and install monitoring technology so you can track your energy production. Work is neat and tidy, with guidance on getting the most from your system.
Financial Benefits
Customers see significant reductions in electricity bills and protection from future energy price rises. You can earn income from excess electricity via the Smart Export Guarantee and increase your property's value. Solar panels also substantially reduce your household's carbon footprint.
Solar grants and money savings
You don't need a grant to have solar panels fitted, but a few things on the money side are worth knowing about.
Domestic solar panel and battery installations carry 0% VAT instead of the usual 20%. The relief runs until 31 March 2027 and applies automatically on the invoice, and standalone batteries have been included since February 2024. Our 0% VAT on solar panels and batteries page explains what qualifies.
The Smart Export Guarantee pays you for electricity you export to the grid, and eligibility depends on the installation being MCS-certified. The solar and battery installation page covers the process and the paperwork, including the documentation your supplier needs to set up export payments.
A battery paired with an off-peak tariff charges when electricity is cheap and runs the house when it is not, with or without solar panels. Our Octopus Go battery installer page sets out how the pairing works.
For households on lower incomes in England, the Warm Homes: Local Grant is a means-tested scheme for properties rated EPC D to G, delivered through local authorities. Eligibility criteria change, so check the current rules on the GOV.UK Warm Homes: Local Grant page.

Renegade Solar is run by Ashley Merritt, an electrician with over 20 years on the tools and more than 10 of those on commercial projects. He does the survey himself, designs the system, oversees the install and picks up the phone afterwards.
That matters more than it sounds. When a salesperson specs a job you get whatever fits the sales sheet. We have been called out to batteries fitted in lofts, which goes against NAPIT guidance, and to quotes worked out from Google Earth that missed the flat roof that made the most sense for the house.
A small Manchester outfit, not a sales operation
Renegade Solar is run by Ashley Merritt, a qualified electrician. Here is what that changes.
You deal with Ashley
Ashley Merritt runs Renegade Solar, does the survey himself and designs the system. There is no call centre and nobody works on commission.
An electrician designs it
Over 20 years on the tools, including more than 10 years on commercial work. The roof, the wiring, the consumer unit and the battery sizing are all one job, not four.
Our own team fits it
The installation is carried out by the in-house Renegade Solar team. Specialist scaffolding is the only part we subcontract.

Brilliant bespoke service at very fair price
Brilliant bespoke service at very fair price. I contacted several solar fitters, wanting panels put on a flat garage roof rather than the pitched main roof. None were interested. Ashley was happy to look at the best solution and design at a price way less than a pitched roof fitting (no scaffolding needed). And he is an absolute pleasure to deal with. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone.

My go-to guy for everything solar and electric
My go-to guy for everything solar and electric. Over the last few years Ashley has massive upgraded the electrical setup in our house, with solar panels, two batteries, a car charger, new fuse board, new outdoor sockets, security lights, extractor fan.. I’m sure there’s more. Every job is tackled professionally and with a full and honest explanation of the work involved. On top of all of that, he’s a lovely dude who is a joy to be around. The questions we get asked most
How much do solar panels cost in Manchester?
There is no fixed price because the cost depends on the roof, the system size, whether a battery is included and how awkward the access is. Ashley surveys the property and issues a written proposal that shows the equipment, the labour and the assumptions behind the generation figures.
What size solar system does my house need?
The honest answer comes from your usage and your roof, not from a sales package. Systems are sized from what your household actually consumes and the roof space available, and typical domestic batteries run from about 5kWh to 15kWh.
How long does the installation take?
A standard residential installation is commonly completed in one to two days, depending on the roof, the scaffolding, the electrical work and the weather. The installation itself is done by the in-house team. Only the specialist scaffolding is subcontracted.
What is included in a solar and battery installation?
Every installation includes MCS certification, BS 7671 electrical certification and monitoring where the equipment supports it, plus two years of routine maintenance. Commissioning, handover and guidance on getting the most from the system are part of the job, not extras.
